Transforming Published Qatar Economic Statistics into an Interactive Balance of Payments Dashboard
Understanding a country's external economic position requires more than looking at a single financial indicator.
The Balance of Payments (BoP) brings together multiple components of an economy's transactions with the rest of the world, including the Current Account, Capital and Financial Account, Net Errors & Omissions, Overall Balance, and Changes in Reserves.
This project was developed to turn publicly published statistical data into an interactive analytical environment for examining Qatar's macro-economic trends over multiple years.
The solution uses datasets published by Qatar's statistical authority and transforms the underlying data into a Power BI dashboard designed to help users explore historical movements, year-over-year changes, account components, and the composition of Qatar's Balance of Payments.
The dashboard provides views across:
- Overall Balance of Payments
- Current Account
- Capital & Financial Account
- Year-over-year movement
- Account-level components
- Category-level analysis
- Historical trends from 2019 to 2024
- Key macro-economic indicators
The intended stakeholders include banking-sector professionals and data analysts who need a consolidated way to examine macro-economic movements from published statistical data.
From Public Statistics to Macro-Economic Insight
Turning Published Data Into an Analytical Experience
Public statistical datasets can contain a large amount of valuable information, but extracting meaningful trends from them often requires users to work across tables, spreadsheets, and individual indicators.
This project takes a published statistical dataset and organizes it into an interactive reporting environment.
The source data covers the Balance of Payments, while the dashboard organizes the information into three primary analytical views:
Overall BoPCurrent Account BoPCapital & Financial Account BoP
This structure allows users to begin with the overall external balance and then move into the accounts that contribute to it.
Overall Balance of Payments
Starting With the Complete External Position
The Overall BoP view provides the high-level picture of Qatar's Balance of Payments across the historical period shown in the dashboard.
The main visual tracks the Overall BoP by year, while supporting visuals provide:
- Year-over-year percentage difference
- 2024 overall balance
- Current Account
- Capital & Financial Account
- Net Errors & Omissions
- Overall Balance
- Change in Reserves
The dashboard also presents the underlying yearly figures in a supporting table, allowing users to move between the visual trend and the detailed values.
This provides a starting point for understanding how Qatar's external balance changed across the reporting period.
Current Account Analysis
Examining the Components Behind External Trade and Income Flows
The Current Account provides a more detailed view of the transactions contributing to the country's external position.
The dashboard breaks the Current Account into key components including:
- Current Transfers
- Goods
- Income
- Services
The Current Account BoP by Year visual allows users to examine how these components changed between 2019 and 2024.

The dashboard combines the historical trend with a current-period summary, making it possible to examine both the movement over time and the composition of the latest reported position.
Current Account by Category
Moving From the Trend to the Components
The Current Account dashboard also provides a category-level view for the latest year shown.
For 2024, the dashboard displays the contribution of:
Current Transfers | Goods | Income | Services
through a horizontal category chart.
This creates a second analytical layer:
Historical Trend → Current-Year Composition
Users can therefore move from understanding how the Current Account changed over time to examining the categories contributing to the latest position.
Capital & Financial Account
Understanding the Financial Side of the Balance of Payments
The second major analytical area focuses on the Capital & Financial Account.
The dashboard organizes this account into components including:
- Direct Investment
- Financial Derivatives, Net
- Other Investment
- Portfolio Investment
The year-by-year view shows how these components changed across the historical period.

This allows users to examine the financial account not simply as one aggregate figure, but through the individual components contributing to its movement.
Capital & Financial Account by Category
Breaking Down the Latest Financial Position
The dashboard complements the historical trend with a category-level view for 2024.
The latest-year analysis highlights the contribution of:
- Direct Investment
- Financial Derivatives, Net
- Other Investment
- Portfolio Investment
A supporting summary provides the corresponding 2024 position, while the historical table retains the previous years for comparison.
This combination of historical and current-period views makes it easier to move from trend analysis to component-level investigation.
Year-over-Year Macro-Economic Analysis
Comparing Changes Across Multiple Years
One of the important analytical features of the dashboard is its use of year-over-year percentage differences.
The dashboard does not only display the absolute QAR values. It also places percentage changes alongside the historical figures.
For example, the Current Account component table includes yearly values and corresponding % Difference measures, allowing users to examine changes between reporting years.
This creates two complementary perspectives:
Absolute Financial Movement and Relative Year-over-Year Change

The same approach is applied to the Capital & Financial Account, where users can examine annual component values together with their corresponding changes.
A Detailed Account-Level View
From Dashboard Trends to Underlying Data
The dashboard also includes a detailed account table covering the major Balance of Payments classifications across the reporting years.
The structure includes:
- A. Current Account
- B. Capital and Financial Account
- C. Net Errors & Omissions
- D. Overall Balance
- E. Change in Reserves
Within these categories, the underlying components are retained, providing a detailed view beneath the higher-level dashboard visuals.

This detailed view provides a useful connection between the underlying published dataset and the visual reporting layer.
Key Economic Highlights
Connecting Dashboard Analysis With Published Statistics
The project also incorporates a Key Highlights section to provide contextual interpretation alongside the visual analysis.
The Key Highlights section provides contextual information on major movements across the Balance of Payments, including:
- Overall Balance of Payments
- Merchandise trade balance
- Services balance
- Net income balance
- Net transfers
- Current Account balance
- Capital and financial account
- Foreign Direct Investment
- Net Portfolio Investments
This provides an important distinction between two layers of the reporting experience:
Interactive Analysis for exploring the data and Key Highlights for summarizing important movements identified within the published statistics.

A Three-Layer Analytical Experience
One of the strongest aspects of this dashboard is the way it allows users to move between three levels of analysis.
1. Overall Position - What is the overall Balance of Payments position?
↓
2. Account Level - Which major accounts are contributing to that position?
↓
3. Component Level - Which individual categories are driving changes within those accounts?
This creates a natural analytical path:
Overall BoP → Current / Capital & Financial Accounts → Individual Components → Year-over-Year Change
That structure is particularly useful for analysts who need to move from a high-level economic indicator into the underlying components.
Data Foundation
Working With Published Qatar Statistical Data
The stated source for this project is:
Published Dataset from Public Statistics Authority – Qatar
The dashboard demonstrates how a publicly available statistical dataset can be transformed into an analytical reporting environment. The source data is organized into the Balance of Payments structure and then presented through interactive Power BI views covering:
- Historical trends
- Annual comparisons
- Category breakdowns
- Year-over-year changes
- Detailed account tables
- Current-period summaries
Official Qatar statistical publications have historically included Balance of Payments indicators sourced from Qatar Central Bank statistical publications.
Built for Banking and Data Analysis
Supporting Macro-Economic Analysis With Interactive Reporting
The intended stakeholders for this dashboard are:
Banking Sector ProfessionalsData Analysts
For these users, the value of the dashboard lies in bringing multiple macro-economic measures into a single analytical experience.
Instead of reviewing individual tables independently, users can navigate from the overall Balance of Payments into specific accounts and components while retaining the historical context.
The dashboard therefore acts as an analytical layer over the published statistical data.
Project Outcome
