Class Introduction

This was a Power BI data modeling training class led by Team (Dinesh) with students including Mahdi, Joy, Nits, Balajee, Rinju, Ramesh, and Shabeeba. The class focused on explaining the importance of data modeling as the "heart" of Power BI, using a pizza/biryani metaphor to illustrate how proper data integration is crucial for creating comprehensive business reports. Team demonstrated how to connect multiple Excel sheets using Power Query, specifically working with a journal entry dataset and cost center information to create relationships between dimension tables and fact tables. The students practiced creating relationships in Power BI Desktop, learning concepts like many-to-one cardinality and cross-filter directions. Team emphasized that data modeling allows for interactive reporting where users can drill down into data from multiple sources, unlike traditional top-down reporting approaches that require multiple Excel sheets. The class concluded with instructions for students to review the difference between fact tables and dimension tables before the next session, which will cover the Northwind Traders dataset in detail.

Class Migration to Online Format
The team discussed moving the class online due to low attendance, with only two people (Mr. Jobin and Rinju) consistently attending the face-to-face sessions in June. The instructor explained that today's session would focus on data modeling theory, comparing it to cooking biryani properly, and mentioned that the class would be conducted 100% online. Several team members including Mahdi, Joy, and Nitya joined the session, though some had scheduling conflicts with other classes.

Class Review and Data Modeling
The team discussed reviewing previous class recordings, with Balajee planning to complete review of all six classes over the next four days. The group addressed issues with attendance and access to the Northwind Traders file, with Dinesh noting that half the participants missed the previous data modeling class. Dinesh emphasized the importance of data modeling as the "engine of the car" and announced plans to provide a recap lecture and share a new finance-focused dataset in the group and WhatsApp for participants to access.

Power BI Data Modeling Discussion
The team discussed sharing a file in both Zoom chat and WhatsApp Power BI group, with Denise confirming it was shared and Balajee eventually receiving it after a resend. The main focus was on data modeling in Power BI, with an instructor explaining its importance using a Team Academy example involving customer databases, student records, attendance tracking, and fee information across different systems. The discussion highlighted how transaction records (like attendance and payments) differ from registration records (like customer databases), and how multiple departments might generate separate reports that a CEO would need to consolidate.

Power BI Implementation Discussion
The team discussed the limitations of current reporting methods, particularly the dependency on multiple Excel sheets and cross-departmental data collection. They explored the benefits of implementing Power BI to create integrated, interactive reports that would allow users to access comprehensive data with a single click, rather than relying on top-down reporting approaches. The discussion included an example of a scheduling and tracking report for Hamad Medical Corporation that demonstrated how a consolidated Power BI report could replace multiple Excel sheets and PowerPoint slides.

Power BI Data Modeling Tutorial
The team explained how Power BI automatically updates data when connected to sources like Excel sheets or databases, eliminating the need for manual updates after initial setup. They demonstrated data modeling by connecting two Excel sheets - a journal entries table and a cost centers table - showing how to create relationships between dimension and fact tables using Power BI's model view. The instructor assigned homework for participants to study the theoretical difference between fact and dimension tables before the next class, which will cover the Northwind Traders case study in detail.
